ARTIST STATEMENT

I am drawn to the fragile and ephemeral, exploring the relationship of femininity and shame in my textile pieces. The process of stitching is something tender and intimate but also visceral and painful.

My oil paintings have stemmed from my work as a floral designer, capturing the fleeting moments of bloom and emphasizing landscapes that might be deemed common. I see beauty in the every day and attempt to hold onto the sense of quiet wonder from the overlooked spaces.

ABOUT S. BYRON

After studying sculpture at university, Byron worked as a floral designer for six years exploring the dichotomy of abundance paired with the ephemeral nature of life. Her designs were often characterized by large-scale experiential beauty featuring strong lines and “floating” sculptural pieces. After moving across the country, her practice shifted to one of reflective oil painting and modern textiles. Her process is diverse and dynamic, with inspiration coming from poetry, impressionism and creation.
